Our field encompasses both slums and underprivileged village areas in South 24 Pargans, which mostly consist of people who have been displaced from our colony areas which now fall under KMC because of extension and improvements of the city by the government. These people have been pushed further and further back and most of them have settled in and around the river embankments. But their plight does not end there. The development encroachers (promoters) are encroaching on them at a  faster level and they are displaced day in and day out. We are also working for the people who have migrated to our city -because of unfriendly economic and natural calamities in their respective native places of Bihar and Gujarat mostly. During our interaction with them at various stages they have revealed to us that they are mostly unable to find any source of sustenance in their native places. For them it was the basic question of survival or death. They chose to fight for survival over death.

But the sad scenario is that their flight was not the end of the journey for them. It was just the beginning…….another place, another future awaited them. Some are dwelling in the pavements only. Others have found shelter at very cheap rates. But their struggle does not end here. These people stay in a very unhygienic condition with two or three families sharing the same 4/5 ft room each. As a result of this they are subjected to various kinds of harassments from a very tender age (Both mental and physical). They are sexually harassed also.

All the above mentioned conditions give rise to trafficking and flesh trade. Some are sold off at a very tender age of nine years also.

It is worthy to note that even with the improvement in the health field, the people are suffering immensely. Most of the people have become frustrated with the government system of functioning in the health department. Apart from this the people do not have the adequate infrastructure for quick and most needed attainment to their health. Though our organization have a good team of doctors and nurses it is not sufficient to meet the need of our beneficiaries and the people of our Community specially the mothers, children, youths and the aged.

But working with them for three years we have been able to make some progress with them. We have been able to build some rapport we them though we will not say that we are 100% successful.

Coming back to the question of their socio-economic condition all the people that we are rendering our services to- belong to below poverty line bracket.

Most of the male folks are daily wage labourers, rickshaw pullers, vendors, truck drivers and some of them are without any employments even. Most of them are taking intoxicants in one form or the other.  But the pathetic scenario is this that they are wasting away whatever meagre they are earning in their various addictions leaving their family to fend for themselves.

This scenario gives rise to malfunctioning in their family life. More often than not forcing their womenfolk and children out of their home and finding a means of sustenance for themselves and the family.

With their sort of background the monthly income comes to 1000-2000/- per month taking care of 7-8 family members per household.

All the above mentioned conditions give rise to a vicious circle of no education, school drop outs, poor health, child labour, wife battering, subjugation of the women folks, child marriages, flesh trade, trafficking and the children themselves getting involved with the various forms of addictions at a tender age of 5-7 years also.
